Word in the industry is that some customers are offering two to three times the going price to major passive component makers such as Yageo (2327) and Murata Manufacturing just to lock down enough supply. Yageo, for its part, acknowledged that "MLCC demand really is very strong." Another notable shift is customers racing to lock in long term contracts. Yageo said AI related customers are increasingly moving to secure passive component supply for the next six months, and in some cases several years out, through long term contracts in order to reduce supply chain risk. Shipments of high specification applications such as AI servers and data centers are ramping quickly, so demand for high capacity, high reliability products is surging. Large customers generally receive higher priority in capacity allocation, while the volumes available to small and midsize customers keep shrinking. Customers with thin inventories of their own, worried that a component shortfall will disrupt shipments of their finished products, have little choice but to bid higher to secure the limited supply on offer.↗ @demishassabis · 请求账号 @demishassabis · 2026-08-09 22:06:35 UTC · 引用原帖:Huge congratulations Shreyas @shrez_royal09 - youngest ever British chess champion at just 17! In fact it works in a very different way. Chinese banks mostly borrow from households to lend to businesses and government. Households are overwhelmingly net creditors to the banks while businesses and government net borrowers. Lowering interest rates, in other words, rather mechanically reduces the household income share of GDP and expand the business and government shares, which means it tends to expand production faster than consumption. We saw this most obviously in the 2000s, when Beijing engineered highly negative real interest rates to help clean up bad debt, and saw a near-collapse of the household share of GDP (and with it, the consumption share). That's why, I argued, credit expansion and lower interest rates in China actually reduce consumption and are likely to be deflationary. This, by the way, was a similar story in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s. Jinfan Zhang and Wei Xiong have just published an NBER paper that makes a very similar point. They write: "This paper investigates why China’s recurrent credit expansions have coincided with persistently weak inflation. We argue that this pattern reflects the country’s production-oriented monetary regime." "Credit expansion in China," they continue, "tends to sustain production and balance sheets rather than stimulate final demand. As a result, monetary policy operates less as a conventional tool for demand management and durable reflation, and more as a mechanism for preserving production capacity and supporting growth." If they are right (and I think they clearly are right), this has the seemingly counter-intuitive implication that rebalancing the economy towards a greater reliance on domestic consumption requires higher, not lower interest rates. Of course given how heavily indebted government and businesses are, raising interest rates will be extremely painful for the production side of the economy, but this simply reinforces what we already know from the historical precedents – that it is necessary, but extremely painful, to rebalance an economy with very low consumption. That's because the income transfers needed to rebalance an economy towards consumption must come from a production side that had previously benefitted from the reverse transfers. This almost always results in a growth contraction on the production side. That is probably why rebalancing is always put off for so long.↗ @Brad_Setser · 请求账号 @Brad_Setser · 2026-08-09 03:38:37 UTC · 引用原帖:Time to return to the reality-based community -- Import growth has lagged demand growth severely over the last 5 years. As I said earlier, markets tend to rotate from bottleneck to bottleneck. This week it looks $AXTI to $LITE in the photonics sector is the focus again. The thing is... the primary thing that changed are the stock prices, followed by some narratives + updates sprinkled in here and there. For photonics: > We already knew $COHR / $LITE lasers were completely sold out for the next 2 years during July's drop. > We knew about demand imbalance from $AAOI from last quarter's earnings calls. Nothing deteriorated fundamentally during July's crash, other than listed price after liquidations. Yet tons of people called $AAOI a "scam" when it dropped to $75, or $AXTI a "scam" on its drop to $35... But are bullish again at $140 or $80, when the transciver/InP substrate bottleneck hasn't changed at all, but maybe even got worse... (eg. draft for US ban on new china optical transceivers, scale up demand projections) For Memory: I'm witnessing a lot of retail capitulation, but the same people I'm seeing were mega bullish after $MU signed 16 SCAs and gave exceptional projections a month ago. Or were celebrating Samsung having the highest operating profit in the world. There's updates here and there eg. Rubin Ultra with memory optimizations (which Nvidia strives for every generation), with prices no longer being hiked way above expectations to the extreme. But the operating income relative to MC is just absurd around current prices, especially memory becomes structural. And the demand imbalance should be even worse next year. People tend to capitulate and follow narratives when a sector drops (eg. Helium/LNG back in Iran war), even if the bottleneck or fundamental situation hasn't really changed much (eg. $SPCX Elon earnings call reiterating memory tightness). I can't tell others what to to do: But $AAOI at $140 and $AAOI at $75 are the same company. Samsung at a $1.5T MC and Samsung at a $980B MC are the same company. Just valuations and narratives (often noise) change, and markets rotate from sector to sector.↗ @Brad_Setser · 请求账号 @Brad_Setser · 2026-08-08 17:13:06 UTC · 引用原帖:The claim "China's banks are desperate need of USD" needs a tad bit of justification.
